Transformation Processes in Minerals (Reviews in Mineralogy and Geochemistry)
Published in Paperback by Mineralogical Society of Amer (25 August, 2000)
Authors: Simon A. T. Redfern and Michael A. Carpenter
Average review score:

Change is all around (and under) us.
The way minerals respond to the forces of change that act upon them in the Earth are many and various. Some are discussed in this volume, which accompanied a short course held in Cambridge in summer 2000. The underlying origins of solid state phase transitions in minerals are explained, and their link to the physical properties of minerals are expounded. Twelve chapters describe the latest ideas on displacive transitions, elastic instabilities, order-disorder and magnetic transitions, radiation-induced amorphisation, twin domains and mesostructure, and the role of solid solutions. The role of pressure on mineral stability is also discussed, as are experimental methods (NMR, Moessbauer, infrared, synchrotron X-rays) for the study of mineral behaviour. This volume provides a helpful introduction to this dynamic research area, and will be useful to advanced undergraduates, graduate students, and those new to the area.

Transmission Electron Microscopy of Minerals and Rocks
Published in Hardcover by Cambridge University Press (May, 1991)
Author: Alex C. McLaren
Average review score:

Must have for TEM using Geologists!
This book is excellent! There are very few books about TEM analyses that are not focused exclusively on engineering applications. This book actually discusses how TEM applies directly to geology and mineralogy, and offers many good examples of potential applications. Very worthwhile!

Travels in the Interior of Brazil
Published in Hardcover by AMS Press (June, 1970)
Author: George Gardner
Average review score:

Time Travels and Lost Worlds
Travels in the interior of Brazil, George Gardner.

Gardner made his epic adventure in the middle of the 1800's entering into a young country with an ancient heritage.. The book opens with a prosaic account of his first senses of Rio. I say senses because every sense is so vividly described. So clear are the descriptions, they take you back to over a century ago and as you travel back with Gardner you marvel at the sights, sounds and flower scented air he describes, on entering the bay. After some time Gardner ventured from Rio to the northern coasts, through unchartered and often physically hostile territories. Amid eloquent descriptions of the hardships of expedition, you travel along and see the places and the peoples as they tread through the book. Towns appear, vividly described, time travel to Crato in the heat stricken northeast Ceara state, and deeper described are local idiosynchrasies, take Crato's fossil fish mines, the peoples, the dusty heat tortured, windswept to flooded and verdant landscapes.. and high plateaus with cascading springs, reminiscent of Arthur Conan Doyle's, Lost World. Perchance was this the book that inspired Conan-Doyle.. with its mention of bizarre exceptionally presereved fossils and high plateau landscapes... A truly magnificent book, believe in time travel and allow yourself to be taken back with this amazing account of one man's epic expedition..

History of Uranium in the Colorado and Utah area.
A good read for people interested in Uranium history. This book would especially interest people in the Four Corners area. Althought this goes into some of the history of U, it is mostly about one man Charlie Steen. This book is not technical.

Bones need both calcium and magnesium.
Most Americans are probably aware that our bodies need calcium to make healthy bones. But many people may not be aware that a lot of Americans don't get enough calcium in their diet. And few people seem to know that healthy bones need magnesium as well as calcium. Unfortunately, magnesium deficiency is even more common than calcium deficiency. No wonder so many Americans suffer from arthritis and osteoporosis. Please read this book and be sure to get enough of the nutrients required for healthy bones.

Vitamins & Minerals from A to Z With Ethno-Consciousness
Published in Paperback by Jewel Pubns (June, 1993)
Author: Jewel Pookrum
Average review score:

Vitamins & Minerals from A to Z
This is a wonderful book that details a medical perspective of differences between Africans and Caucasians and will point you in the right direction toward health. It is fantastic to read a book written by someone who has had the "benefit" of western training and realizes the gaps in "knowledge" in that system.

Dr. Jewel Pookrum does a marvelous job of chronicling chemical reactions, differences that are melanin-related and opens the doors to a deeper understanding of health. This is information that we as a people, MUST grasp before the human genome biological apocalypse is released.

I recommend also any books by Queen Afua and African Holistic Health : Complete Herb Remedy Guide, Disease Treatment, Nutrition, Diet, Wholistic Perspectives, African Herb History, Self Diagnosis by Llaila O. Afrika.
